  • Coach Ken Carter

    SPORTS AWARD

    This award honors an individual who has made a significant impact on the Richmond sports scene by actively promoting athletic participation through leadership, mentorship and advocacy.



    Coach Ken Carter is a renowned educator, mentor, motivational speaker, and former basketball coach whose impact extends far beyond the court. He gained national recognition in 1999 when he held his undefeated Richmond High School basketball team accountable for poor academic performance, demonstrating that education, discipline, and character are more important than wins and losses. His story inspired the acclaimed 2005 film Coach Carter, in which he was portrayed by Samuel L. Jackson.

    For decades, Carter has been a powerful advocate for academic achievement, personal responsibility, and youth development, leaving a lasting legacy in Richmond and inspiring young people across the country to pursue success both in the classroom, in life, and on the court. 


  • John Márquez

    LEADERSHIP AWARD

    This award is presented to a distinguished local leader who has used their platform to amplify the voices of others. This award recognizes their dedication to fostering positive change and empowering the community. Their leadership has made a lasting impact on Richmond’s growth and unity.




    John Márquez is a respected community leader, educator, and public servant whose decades of service have left a lasting impact on Richmond. As the city’s first Latino City Council member, he served for more than two decades, helping to advance inclusion, representation, and opportunities for local residents.

    In addition to his public service, Márquez co-founded the La Raza Studies Department at Contra Costa College, where he helped empower students through education and cultural awareness. He is also widely recognized as one of the driving forces behind Richmond’s annual Cinco de Mayo Festival, a cherished community tradition that celebrates culture and diversity while bringing together thousands of residents each year.

    Through his leadership, advocacy, and commitment to community engagement, John Márquez has helped strengthen Richmond’s civic and cultural fabric, leaving a legacy that continues to inspire future generations.
